The Rock Island District of the Corps of Engineers is part of the Mississippi Valley Division.  Division leadership is very interested in water safety and will continue to evaluate water safety requirements at all Corp’s projects within the division.

Red Rock Lake Association announces the Gladys Black Eagle Cam project as a collaborative effort to enhance knowledge about eagles in the Red Rock Area.The eagle cam will provide live online streaming video and become an educational opportunity.

The camera will provide audio and video relating to the eagle family structure and daily activities. Nest building, courtship, egg laying, chick development and the fledging of the young eagles will be viewable from the camera. Activity at the nest will begin in late October and continue through courtship in January, egg hatching in February and concluding with the birth of the eagle chicks. Educational videos are planned for documenting eagle activity in the nest.

The nest that the camera is watching has produced two eagle chicks in the past year and the parents have been in the Red Rock area for over six years. As the project has progressed, the family of eagles has kept a watchful eye on the nest.

Gladys Black, for which the camera was named after and known as “Iowa’s bird lady”, was a resident of Pleasantville and is a well-known ornithologist and naturalist.

Red Rock Lake Association is working with educators, curriculum directors and other interested parties to spread enthusiasm, learning opportunities and information about the camera.

The first ever Lake Red Rock Balloon Fest will took place July 15-17. Twenty-three balloons took flight over Marion County. The event took place at Lake Red Rock Visitor’s Center. Events included competition flights, an appearance by the Harley Davidson Balloon, various kids’ activities, and more. The event was put on in part by the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce. KNIA/KRLS’s Big Red Radio spent time on site, playing music and making announcements.

Wood will be sold in bundles for $5.00 each. This new amenity is being coordinated through an agreement between the Association and the Corps of Engineers, Marion County Conservation Board and a local wood supplier. If the first year’s test is successful, the Association may consider expanding the service into other lake area parks.
