A Canada Goose has taken up residence in a former eagles nest where the Gladys Black Eagle Cam has been positioned. Several goslings were born on May 16, and may leave soon.  To see the goose and the goslings, click above on LEARN MORE.

Red Rock Lake Association announces the Gladys Black Eagle Cam project as a collaborative effort to enhance knowledge about eagles in the Red Rock Area.The eagle cam will provide live online streaming video and become an educational opportunity.

The camera will provide audio and video relating to the eagle family structure and daily activities. Nest building, courtship, egg laying, chick development and the fledging of the young eagles will be viewable from the camera. Activity at the nest will begin in late October and continue through courtship in January, egg hatching in February and concluding with the birth of the eagle chicks. Educational videos are planned for documenting eagle activity in the nest.

The nest that the camera is watching has produced two eagle chicks in the past year and the parents have been in the Red Rock area for over six years. As the project has progressed, the family of eagles has kept a watchful eye on the nest.

Gladys Black, for which the camera was named after and known as “Iowa’s bird lady”, was a resident of Pleasantville and is a well-known ornithologist and naturalist.

Red Rock Lake Association is working with educators, curriculum directors and other interested parties to spread enthusiasm, learning opportunities and information about the camera.

Come join in on the fun! Balloon Fest 2012 will take place July 13th – 15th. The balloons will launch a total of five times throughout the weekend. The favorite, Night Glow will take place on Saturday evening at 9:00 PM. Additional activities will include:

  • A live band at North Overlook,
  • An outdoor movie at South Overlook,
  • A family Geo-caching event,
  • Sand sculpting,
  • Pancake breakfast at North Overlook Beach and a 5K run/ walk fundraiser hosted by Pella High and Knoxville High Cross Country,
  • Kayak training.

Wood will be sold in bundles for $5.00 each. This new amenity is being coordinated through an agreement between the Association and the Corps of Engineers, Marion County Conservation Board and a local wood supplier. If the first year’s test is successful, the Association may consider expanding the service into other lake area parks.

The first master plan was drawn up in 1976 and included improving the water quality and enhancing the Canadian goose population in the area. We are now seeking input from the community.
